Are my pets grieving for their companion who has passed away?
If my pet(s) is/are grieving, what are the signs I should look for?
Yes, family pets can grieve the loss of another pet. Animals, particularly those with strong social bonds, often display behaviours that indicate they are mourning. Here are some common signs that pets might be grieving:
Changes in Appetite
- Pets may eat less or show a lack of interest in food.
Altered Sleep Patterns
- They may sleep more or less than usual.
Vocalisations
- Increased vocalizations such as whining, howling or barking can indicate distress.
Searching Behaviour
- Pets might search the house for their missing companion, indicating they are trying to find them.
Changes in Social Behaviour
- They might become more clingy, seeking extra attention or they may withdraw and become more aloof.
Depressive Symptoms
- Pets can exhibit signs similar to depression such as lethargy and lack of interest in activities they used to enjoy.
Anxiety or Restlessness
- Increased anxiety or restlessness can be signs of grief, particularly in animals that were closely bonded.
While not all pets will show visible signs of grieving, many do exhibit behaviours that suggest they are mourning the loss of a companion. Understanding and supporting grieving pets through extra attention, maintaining routines and providing comforting activities can help them adjust to the loss.
